Prof. Dr. Ayşe Öner is a distinguished ophthalmology professor and world-recognized stem cell therapy pioneer with extraordinary academic credentials and research achievements spanning 29 years. Born in Adana in 1973, she graduated from high school with honors and began medical education at Çukurova University Medical Faculty in 1990, graduating 7th in her class in 1996.
She earned a position in the Ophthalmology Department at Erciyes University Medical Faculty through the medical specialization exam and completed her residency in 2002 with a thesis on 'Pattern Electroretinography in Myopia: Ganglion Cell Layer and Macular Functions.' During residency, she established the electrophysiology laboratory at Erciyes University, demonstrating research leadership early in her career. Following specialization, she continued as a teaching assistant at Erciyes University, focusing on medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery, and ocular electrophysiology.
To enhance her retina expertise, she completed a 3-month fellowship at Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA) Retina Unit in 2003. She also received observer training at Catholic University of Leuven Ophthalmology Department, Belgium under Prof. Anita Leys in 2006, and at Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute, USA in 2007.
She achieved Associate Professor title in 2008 and Professor title in 2013. She is a FEBO (Fellow of European Board of Ophthalmology) since 2008 and has Turkish Ophthalmology Board Certification since 2012.
She pioneered stem cell therapies in Turkey, conducting Phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical trials for retinal and optic nerve diseases. Her landmark 2016 publication on stem cell implantation in retinitis pigmentosa was among the world's first and has 26 citations by 2021.
Currently, she practices at Acıbadem Health Group, including Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Atakent Hospital and Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital, and continues research at Acıbadem Labcell for stem cell studies.
